BHS, GMC to host region tournaments

To be named the site of a region tournament, especially based on merit, is a great honor.

Both Baldwin High and Georgia Military College Prep have earned that right thanks to the performance of their boys and girls teams, respectively, this basketball season.

BHS will play host to the Region 3-4A tournament later this week while GMC’s Cordell Events Center will house the Region 7-A tournament beginning today. Region champions will be crowned Friday night at Baldwin and Saturday night at GMC Prep.

Both the Braves (19-6 overall, 9-1 region) and Bravettes (25-2 overall, 9-1 region) were regular season champs after only suffering one region loss this season. Both they and Burke County (boys and girls) have received opening round byes for the region tournament, and thus automatic trips to the state tournament as they are guaranteed at least a top-four finish in tournament play. The Baldwin girls will take on the winner of today’s Thomson versus Richmond Academy matchup at 7 p.m. Thursday in the BHS gymnasium. The Bravettes swept both teams in the regular season.

The Baldwin boys are in very much the same situation only they await the winner between ARC and Hephzibah. The Braves swept both the Musketeers and Rebels fairly handily during the regular season. They will play the winner of that game at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Baldwin High School as they work toward their second consecutive region title. The Braves’ lone region loss came at the hands of the Burke County Bears in a close 60-57 contest Jan. 26.

The GMC Prep Lady Dogs, as the top seed in Region 7-A’s Eastern Division, will host the entirety of the girls tournament and the final two rounds of the boys. Action begins today at 4 p.m. at the Cordell Events Center on the GMC campus though the Lady Dogs will not play Mount de Sales until 8:30 p.m. The GMC girls swept the Lady Cavs in a pair of early season contests. If the Lady Dogs win, they will face the winner of the Tattnall Square Academy-Greene County matchup in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday The Region 7-A girls championship will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday in Milledgeville regardless of whether GMC Prep makes it or not.

The GMC boys have a little work to do if they want to advance and play within the friendly confines of their home venue. The first round will be held at Stratford Academy in Macon Wednesday as the Eagles earned the top spot in the boys west division. The Bulldogs will face Twiggs County at 4 p.m. in the opening round with a trip to the semis on the line. If GMC wins Wednesday, they will play the winner of the Stratford-Hancock Central matchup in the semis at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home. The Region 7-A boys championship will be played at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at GMC.
