St. Joseph High School ice hockey team pays tribute to those who protect and serve and honor a hero police officer
Followers of high school wrestling spend significant time analyzing box scores, which only reveal part of the story about a dual meet.
From this weekend’s action, it can, of course, be gleaned that a pin in the final bout led state-ranked Raritan to a 30-28 victory over upset-minded Monroe, or that an 8-7 decision in the final bout propelled Southern Regional to a 29-26 victory over South Plainfield.
What the box score doesn’t reveal, of course, are the details of a specific bout, such as one that turned the tide in a lower profile dual meet between Woodbridge and Colonia in which the Barrons scored a 38-29 upset.
The backstory of the victory epitomizes what makes the sport great and why a wrestler should never consider himself out of a match.
Trailing 15-1 at the start of the third period, Woodbridge 126-pounder Jaden Catalano was on the verge of losing by technical fall when he began chasing his opponent around the mat, looking for a big throw.
“Out of nowhere, Jaden just launches (his opponent) to his back and gets a pin,” Woodbridge head coach Michael Carbone explained. “It was wild. Everybody went nuts.”
Instead of leading at least 16-0, Colonia only led 12-6 three bouts into the dual and lost its early momentum.
Not only did Catalano’s pin create an 11-point swing that decided the dual meet, it allowed Carbone to maintain the integrity of his lineup without having to bump wrestlers the rest of the way, ensuring the Barrons could mount a comeback.
Smith earns 300th career win
Watchung Hills head coach Danny Smith notched his 300th career win with a 48-16 victory over North Hunterdon in which the Warriors won 11 of 14 bouts, five by fall.
Both teams were tied for 20th in the New Jersey Wrestling Writers Association statewide Top 20 poll.
Smith’s record stands at 300-165. His team is currently undefeated with a 15-0 mark.
Tigers honor district alumni
South Plainfield held its annual Alumni Wrestling Night on Saturday, during which the Tigers dropped a 29-26 heartbreaker to Southern Regional. The teams were ranked No. 12 and No. 13 in the state, respectively.
The Tigers celebrated the 10th, 20th and 30th anniversaries of their 2008, 1998 and 1988 district championship teams.
Voorhees nears 600 wins
Voorhees is two victories shy of recording the program’s 600th win. The Vikings all-time record currently stands at 598-264-5.
Voorhees is expected to reach the milestone during a quad at Belvidere on Saturday.
Greg DeMarco Memorial Match
Old Bridge and East Brunswick continued to honor the memory of a coaching legend when both teams participated earlier this month in the 10th annual Greg DeMarco Memorial Match.
A pioneer in the sport, DeMarco, who suffered a fatal heart attack in 2008, was the founder of the once nationally renown Old Bridge Wrestling Festival and developed a weigh-in system for out-of-season tournaments that is now used internationally.
The former computer science teacher parlayed his love of technology and the sport he coached into one of the country’s most successful wrestling web sites: wrestlingassistant.com.
He coached at Old Bridge — then Madison Township and Madison Central high schools — from 1969-77, compiling a 74-41-1 record.
Old Bridge’s Chancellor Cooper and East Brunswick’s Mitch Polito were each honored at the end of the dual with the Wrestler of the Match Award bearing DeMarco’s name.
GMC Blue Division title
The Blue Division championship will be decided Tuesday at Spotswood when the Chargers host Middlesex at 6 p.m.
Middlesex will win the division title with a victory. Middlesex, Spotswood and South River will share the division title if the Chargers defeat the Blue Jays.
NJWWA Top 20 shakeup
With Saturday’s 29-28 victory over Hunterdon Central, Emerson-Park Ridge remained undefeated and will surely move up in the NJWWA’s Top 20 rankings.
Emerson-Park Ridge entered the dual ranked No. 17. Hunterdon Central was ranked No. 6.
