The Sayreville High School wrestling team clinched the Greater Middlesex Conference White Division championship while simultaneously catapulting itself into potential playoff qualifying position with a dramatic 37-31 comeback victory over Colonia on Saturday morning.

Down six points with two bouts remaining, Sayreville head coach Marcus Ivy said he knew he had the right two wrestlers on deck to rally the Bombers to victory.

Antonio Oneto (182) and Savon Kirksey (195) recorded first-period pins over their respective opponents to help Sayreville improved to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the division. The division title is the second in three years for the Bombers.

Even if the Bombers should lose their final division dual on Wednesday night against New Brunswick, Sayreville has already clinched the division crown because it owns head-to-head tie-breakers with victories over Colonia and Woodbridge. Only one of those two schools can complete their respective division slates with just one loss to finish in a tie with Sayreville.

Sayreville entered the dual with Colonia behind the Patriots and Linden in the North 2 Group IV power points rankings with the seventh most points in the section. With Saturday’s win, the Bombers moved into fifth place, leapfrogging ahead of both Colonia and Linden, in their bid to qualify for the playoffs.

With just three seniors in the starting lineup, Sayreville is built for the future, but the Bombers’ time is apparently now.

“I don’t want to say next year is our year,” Ivy said, “but we’ve got a lot of juniors and sophomores. Hypothetically, next year should be our year to be successful. To have the success we are having now is just huge.”

Sayreville split bouts with Colonia but owned a 16-10 advantage in bonus points with Dylan Acevado (106), Brandon Alicea (126), Trevor Mastorio (138), Oneto and Kirksey all recording pins. Darren Figueroa (113) posted a major decision for the Bombers.

The dual started at 220 pounds, where Colonia bumped Christian Irizarry up from 195 to face Joseph Porcaro, who Irizarry decisioned 5-0.

Adrian Najar followed with an overtime win over Benedict Arthur at heavyweight to give the Patriots a short-lived 6-0 lead.

Sayreville won five of the next six bouts to mount a 25-12 advantage.

Colonia reeled off four straight victories from 145 through 170 pounds with standout John Poznanski capping the stretch with a pin for a 31-25 lead.

Colonia’s Matthew Sternesky, who bumped up from 138 pounds to avoid Mastorio, was unable to get bonus points at 145 pounds in a 6-0 decision over Diego Candelario. The ability of Aaron Bartlett to limit Colonia standout Luke Pero to a major decision at 152 pounds was also paramount.

“We needed those guys to wrestle six minutes,” Ivy said of Candelario and Bartlett. “We knew it (the final score) could be tight. We had guys doing their job. When you wrestle six minutes, that’s a win (sometimes), even though you may not get your hand raised.”

A second-year wrestler and owner of a 15-4 record against quality competition, Kirksey, who finished with a .500 record last season, is among the conference’s most improved grapplers.

A member of Sayreville’s perennial state power football program, Kirksey is just the type of athlete Ivy wants to compete for the Bombers in the upper weights.

“We saw his potential last year,” Ivy said. “This year he’s made steps to not make silly first-year wrestling mistakes. His athleticism is second to none and he’s got the desire to learn.

"Coming into the wrestling room, he wants to get better, and it’s showing. He’s wrestling quality kids and winning.”
