Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) plans to set up a burial ground for pets at Boragaon here.
The decision has been taken based on the increase in the number of pet lovers in the city and their demand to have a permanent resting place for their pets.
GMC commissioner Monalisa Goswami said, "Now most families like to keep pets. It has become a trend in Guwahati. But when a pet dies there is no designated place to bury it and no one wants to put one's beloved pet in a dustbin. Most Guwahatian are emotionally attached to their pets. So, we have planned to set up the burial ground."
A GMC official said the burial ground will be set up on a two- bigha land near the dumping ground of Boragaon in the southern part of the city. The tender for the project will be called soon and the deadline to complete the project is next year. It will be cost around Rs 30 lakh and the proposal for it has already been prepared.
"There is a dumping ground the GMC runs and the burial ground will be set up near it. There is a lot of work to be done, as it is a very low-lying area and we have to fill it up," Goswami said.
The GMC has also started a drive to register pets in the city.
According to a GMC act, every family has to register its pet by paying a fee. However, very few people know about it because of lack of awareness.
"Till now, around 24 pets have been registered after a circular was issued in December. We request everyone to register their pets. After registration, we will give a token that will be an identity mark for a pet," GMC veterinary officer Pradip Medhi said.
The registration fee is Rs 200, to be renewed every year by paying Rs 206. The GMC has the authority to seize unregistered pets any time.
