The Spotswood girls basketball team defeated South River 48-28 on Jan. 17, 2018. Lauren Knego

1. Bishop Ahr (17-0) – Last Week No. 1: It’s one thing getting eye-popping wins over teams that are struggling. It’s another when you beat ranked teams by huge margins. The Trojans looked awfully impressive in the poll week (Thursday to Thursday) against squads hoping to make runs in the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament and the postseason. Bishop Ahr remained undefeated with a 66-35 win over No. 5 Woodbridge, a 64-43 win over No. 6 Sayreville and a 65-35 victory over South Plainfield. Emma Boslet, Sara Decker and Megan Herka continue to lead the way with double-doubles and assists galore. This week, Bishop Ahr has a fun game against No. 3 Piscataway on Saturday and gets Sayreville again on Thursday.

2. East Brunswick (14-0) – Last Week No. 2: Good teams want to get tested, and the Bears pulled out a 40-37 win over No. 4 South Brunswick on Jan. 22. Nicole Johnson led the way with 17 points. East Brunswick, which also beat Perth Amboy and Old Bridge by large margins, controls its destiny in the GMC Red Division. Not that things get much easier. East Brunswick’s next three games are against Skyland Conference power Bridgewater-Raritan, a rematch with South Brunswick and No. 3 Piscataway.

3. Piscataway (14-2) – Last Week No. 3: Adversity happens to everyone. The Chiefs, though, showed they can rebound fast after losing to Bridgewater-Raritan 40-17 on Jan. 20. In a busy GMC Red Division week, Piscataway then beat Monroe 69-49, Old Bridge 67-27 and No. 4 South Brunswick 39-21. The Chiefs remain a game behind East Brunswick for first in the division and they meet Feb. 3. First up for LaNiya Miller, Ariel Jenkins, Yamirah Bennett, Saniya Myers and company are games this week against No. 1 Bishop Ahr and division foe Monroe.

4. South Brunswick (9-5) – Last Week No. 4: Some weeks are tougher than others. The Vikings went 1-3 against ranked teams. However, they don’t tumble from the No. 4 spot because two of those defeats were against No. 2 East Brunswick (40-37) and No. 3 Piscataway (39-21), and to non-conference Hunterdon Central (37-32), No. 10 in the Courier News Top 10. South Brunswick nipped No. 9 J.P. Stevens 39-37 to show they’re still players. Alexis Adams leads with 14 points and eight rebounds a game. Another difficult week is on tap with games against No. 2 East Brunswick, No. 6 Sayreville and non-conference Allentown (11-2).

5. Woodbridge (9-6) – Last Week No. 5: The Barrons produced one of the season’s best moments when senior Brooke Timinski scored her 1,000th career point in a 56-45 win over New Brunswick on Jan. 23. Simply, 1,000 points is in her DNA as her mother, Heidi Waterman Timinski, scored 1,000 career points for Shore Regional and her father – and Woodbridge coach Bobby – surpassed the mark playing for both Colonia and St. Anselm College. This season, Brooke has gotten scoring help from Kameron De Vogd and Kelsey Savoia has chipped in with rebounds. The Barrons also beat Colonia 63-38, but lost to No. 1 Bishop Ahr, 66-35. They remain in third place in the GMC White Division, two games in the loss column behind Sayreville and four games behind Bishop Ahr. Woodbridge, however, beat Sayreville on Jan. 11.

6. Sayreville (10-5) – Last Week No. 7: Remember when Sayreville had preseason question marks in replacing all five starters from last season? Most teams don’t either. The Bombers continued to play well with a 2-1 week: wins over Colonia (46-25) and South Plainfield (52-38) and a 64-43 loss to No. 1 Bishop Ahr, a team nobody has solved. Sayreville sits in second place in the GMC White behind the Trojans with a 9-2 conference record. Jackie Ventricelli scored a season-high 20 points in that Colonia win and Janeva Holland tied a season-high with 12 points against Colonia and South Plainfield. This week, Sayreville has a tough stretch with games against No. 1 Bishop Ahr and No. 4 South Brunswick. No. 5 Woodbridge looms on Feb. 3.

7. Middlesex (13-0) – Last Week No. 8: You want to get noticed? Keep winning. The Blue Jays haven’t slowed down all season and had a 2-0 week with a 70-40 win over non-conference Willingboro and a 58-34 GMC Blue Division victory over a tough Carteret team. In that game, Olivia Robel nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds and nine steals. This week, Middlesex may get tested with its first meeting of the season against Blue Division foe South River (10-5) and non-conference Scotch Plains-Fanwood (10-4).

8. Spotswood (10-4) – Last Week No. 9: The Chargers move up a spot despite one game this week, a 57-22 win over Mother Seton (1-9). While the jump had more to do with Edison dropping after a 1-2 week, Spotswood is for real. The Chargers own a 60-49 win over No. 5 Woodbridge on Jan. 15 and have two victories apiece over fellow GMC Blue Division members South River and Carteret. Leading the way have been Courtney Potter, Maddie Hellerich and Erin Malin with Amber Meagher and Savannah Robinson chipping in recent double-digit scoring efforts. Spotswood has an interesting matchup this week against the GMC Red Division’s Monroe (5-10), which has played teams tough despite its record.

9. J.P. Stevens (8-6) – Last Week No. 10: The Hawks just missed a chance at a signature win on Jan. 23 losing 39-37 to No. 4 South Brunswick. In that game, they led 31-23 entering the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on. But on Jan. 25, J.P. Stevens did get that marquee W with a 59-35 victory over No. 10 Edison led by balanced scoring from Disha Prabhudesai, Megan Duffy, Kayla Gatling and Kiarah Turner.

10. Edison (6-9) – Last Week No. 6: The Eagles fall from No. 6 to No. 10 after a 1-2 week that includes losses to unranked Monroe (5-10) and to No. 9 J.P. Stevens. Edison, which beat Perth Amboy 65-27, had a brutal early schedule and is 1-5 against teams in the Top 4. Despite its record, Edison is still dangerous led by Virginia Lagdameo, Lourdes Marasigan, Daniella Marmol and Samira Sargent.
