Georgia Military College Prep School will be celebrating both the holiday season and its award-winning fine arts program Tuesday night.
The school is hosting a Fine Arts Gala on its campus with fun for the whole family on the schedule. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with GMC Prep’s first art exhibit and showing since adding a full visual arts program to the school’s curriculum at the start of this year. The exhibit will take place in the legislative chamber of the Old Capitol Building from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. To cap off the magical night, performing arts students from every grade will take to the stage on Grant Parade in a show developed by GMC Prep faculty.
“What a true honor it has been to start the visual arts program at GMC Prep School,” said Paige Barlow, head of the GMC Prep visual arts program. “There is a wide variety of artistic talent at GMC and I am excited to be able to develop projects for the students and showcase their artwork. I believe that every child can be artistic. It has been my goal to help them find out how they are artistic and how they can be creative. The key is finding what their passions are and connecting their passions to art.”
Works created by the young artists throughout the first two nine weeks of the school year will be showcased including their Veterans Day portrait projects. Students created portraits of family members who had served in the military and the over 100 works were shown after GMC Prep’s Veterans Day parade.
“This was quite a moving exhibit as it expressed the sincere thanks for the service these veterans have given,” Barlow said. “Many veterans were at the exhibit to take pictures with the students.”
The public is invited to attend the art showcase free of admission, enjoy some refreshments, and meet the young artists.
Once the art exhibit closes at 6:30 p.m. the party moves outside for the school’s second annual outdoor holiday- themed celebration where the performing arts will take center stage.
“The performing arts show, which is called ‘Light Magic: Celebrations of Earth’, involves all of our groups — musical theatre, dance, band, and soloists,” said GMC Prep Fine Arts Director Mark Weaver.
Tickets to “Light Magic” are $7 for adults and $5 for GMC Prep students, faculty, staff, seniors, and children and the show is set to begin at 7 p.m. though there will be pre-show entertainment happening all around the parade field. Weaver says that after seeing how last year’s show hit with the audience, it was an easy call to make to continue the school’s new tradition.
“It was an experiment that went great, so we decided to expand and continue,” he said. “This year’s story is different. We’re focusing on traditional holidays around the world. All of our performing groups will be showcasing various holidays from different cultures as we go through our story. The story follows a little girl who has lost her father. She’s kind of in a bad place, and ends up going to sleep on the roof of her apartment building. The entire show happens in her dream. By the end of her journey everything comes full circle. She realizes that the holidays are about family no matter where you are.”
Weaver wrote the script for the show that he described as something along the lines of “The Wizard of Oz” meets “The Nutcracker.” GMC Prep musical theatre teacher Jenny Morris choreographed the show and school band director James Brewer will of course be directing the band. Over 200 students will be involved in the night’s festivities
“We’ve got pyro and we’ve got projections,” the fine arts director added. “The Old Capitol Building will actually be projected onto. It’s a really cool show.”
Tickets for “Light Magic” may be purchased at the gate the night of the show or in advance online at www.GMCPrep.com.
