Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is planning to relocate the street vendors of Fancy Bazar to its multi-storeyed market in the same area after its renovation.
The three-storeyed market building was reconstructed in 2013, but because of various technical problems it's second and third floors are yet to be utilised.
"GMC reopened the market complex in 2013, 17 years after its devastation in a major fire. Many businessmen relocated themselves to other parts of the city. Moreover, in the earlier plan there were some drawbacks that led to it's current condition. So now we have planned make the place business friendly," GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania said.
In the first phase, GMC will relocate the vendors on SS Road of Fancy Bazar area to the mezzanine floor of the market. "The garment vendors will relocate to the mezzanine floor. We have planned a budget of around Rs 50 lakh to renovate the mezzanine floor and within a month we will carry out the project. We hope in next two months we will able relocate these businessmen," Sarania said.
This decision to relocate the vendors has come after a Gauhati High Court verdict to evict the vendors of SS Road. Parking facility will also be introduced in the market, Sarania said.
"The upper floor will house shops selling accessories for women, a food court and a boutique. We will follow the structure of New Market of Shillong and Siliguri in implementing the project," Sarania said.
Kamrup (metro) deputy commissioner had recently constituted a task force, comprising officials from district administration and police, to examine the allegations regarding traffic congestion and problems created by undisciplined business establishment in the Fancy Bazar area.
