The GMC Women’s Soccer team (13-2-1) finished up their regular season last week by beating Andrew College, 1-0. With the win the team finished the season as regular season champions for the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association. This historic year is not over yet as they will play Friday, Nov. 3 at home at 7 p.m. for the GCAA Conference Tournament Championship against Gordon State College. The match will shape up to be a competitive match as they have played each other three times this year as GMC has one win, one loss and one tie against Gordon State. The women’s team has soared to new heights behind a well-balanced attack on both sides of the field. The charge has been led by freshman, Adisa Nwawel who is leading the nation in all NJCAA Division I Women’s programs in goals scored at 34, with seven of them being game winners.
By winning 12 of their last 14 games the team has also set a new mark for most wins in season with 13 as the previous record for wins in a season for the program was eight, set in 2016.
Head Coach, Courtney Morgan stated, “The goal at the beginning of the year was for us to be in this position now to have home field advantage for the chance to go to the NJCAA National Championship in Melbourne, Florida. We are taking it only one game at a time now as we move forward. The girls are committed to working hard this upcoming week in preparation for the game next Friday. I love how the team is not satisfied yet on what has been accomplished this year and they are seeking to continue to take the program to new heights.”
The GCAA Conference Championship game will be played at the GMC Soccer Complex on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. It is free to attend, so put it on your calendar and make plans to attend and support the women’s soccer team as they continue their run to Melbourne, Florida at East Florida College, where the final 12 teams will play for the National Championship, November 13-18, 2017.
